Computers sharing processing power?

I was wondering if it is possible to use the processing power of one computer on a LAN from another. For instance, my father-in-law does alot of video editing but he only has a Dell with a 1.6 GHz CPU %26 768 MB of slow RAM---I have a MacBook (2nd gen) with a 2.16 GHz CPU and 2 GB of fast RAM. We are connected thru an Apple Airport Extreme gigabit router. It would be nice if there was some kind of program or software that allowed him to use one of his video editing programs to do something on his Dell but my MacBook's CPU would be doing all the work. I figure this would be a difficult if not impossible system to set up even if both computers were identical. Making it worse is the fact he has a Dell running XP %26 I have a MacBook running OS X. I'm expecting to find out it's impossible but maybe someone knows a way...

Computers sharing processing power?computer security

you want to run a program off of one comp, and the end results go to the other comp...that aint happening..plus you want to run a PC program, and put that result on a Apple? That aint happening either, unless your apple runs boot camp, and is running the same os as ur pc...

How do I network my 2nd computer with my 1st computers printer?

How do I network my 2nd computer with my 1st computers printer?computer virus

First make sure both computers are on the same workgroup. Now share the printer using file and printer sharing. After this go to the remote printer and connect.

And if one of the PCs is running Vista you have a few more steps to go through

How do I network my 2nd computer with my 1st computers printer?free spyware remover

First you have to share your printer on your office computer and both computers must be on the same workgroup or network and "printer and file sharing" is installed on your PC's, but by default these are installed . Assuming that both computers belong to the same network (can communicate), first you must share the your printer by changing it properties. to do this, you must open printer properties and select "share this printer" and assign a printer name (it could be HP Printer or the default assigned name will do). Then go to your garage PC and open "printers" on the control panel or the start button (for win XP)... choose add printer and select "network printer".. the system will automatically scan for the shared printer on you network... choose the printer that appears on office PC.. next steps are straight forward and simple.. enjoy..
Use a wireless router if your printer has a usb port, connect a usb splitter to the back of the printer, connect the hardwired usb from the first computer to the first port on the splitter, connect the wireless router usb to the second port. Use a usb transceiver thumb type or router pci card to you second computer. The wireless router acting as an independent wireless usb. cable.
run the home office network setup choosing the current connection and enable file and print sharing on both computers. then on the one with the printer, go into printers and faxes and right click on your printer and enable sharing on it. then go to the other computer and add a network printer, you will need the driver disk and point it to the disc for the drivers, then it should be able to use the printer hooked to the other computer.
As long as they're both on the same network it doesn't matter whether one is Vista, Xp etc.

Linking 2 computers to file share?

iv tried all the wizards and iv created a workgroup and everything, but when i try to access either computer through the opposit computer it just sais i might not have permission to access this server. can somebody please help me, like a step by step.

The 2 computers are connected to a router using crossover cables and both running on win xp pro.

if connecting from PC to router you should be using straight through cables not crossover cables.

So if both PCs are connected with straight through cables to the hub or router, then enable file %26 print sharing, share 1 folder (anything or make one) to start with, make sure they are both in the same workgroup. if that still doesn't work its probably firewall, disable any security or firewall software and try it. once you know what it is you can configure the firewall and re-enable it

get a wireless router it will be much more simple believe me
dont need a crossover cable.. its on a router

Can Norton's be installed on multiple home computers?

I recently bought a new computer, and bought the most recent version of Norton's Antivirus for that computer. I also have an older computer that runs Norton's Antivirus 2003.

Could Norton's be installed on the older computer? If so, how does the subscription for LiveUpdate "work" with both computers, especially once the subscription needs to be renewed?

Also, if the newest Norton's can be installed on the older computer, do I need to uninstall Norton's Antivirus 2003 first, or would the newest version automatically uninstall it?

I know that, generally, you can install programs on multiple home computers, but I just don't know how LiveUpdate would "react" to this.

Can Norton's be installed on multiple home computers?downloads

no. Norton will not let you update the second computer. next time you should buy the Norton package with the multiple licenses. its more expensive but then you can install it on multiple computers.

and yes, if you install a new copy of Norton with one that has an older version, then the new copy will delete it as it is being installed.

Can Norton's be installed on multiple home computers?house call

If you had to active Norton or enter a product key or anything like that during installation then it can only be used on one machine. You will know far in advance before the live update that you would not be able to run more then one license of norton.

Clear your CMOS. Check your motherboard manual, it will tell you how.

After i update my computers BIOS it becam unbooted! Please HELP!!!?hp

pull your bios battery see if it reverts back to the old bios after you put it back in. this is located on your motherboard looks like a giant watch battery.
What the other have recommended might work but it is unlikely that it will. If you did install the wrong BIOS then the only way to fix it is to replace the motherboard entirely.
What do you get when you turn on the PC? Can you even enter the CMOS setup screen? You can try to use a boot disk in the cd-drive to start it (assuming that you need it to install the BIOS firmware). If you do not have a boot disk on CD then you can create one using another PC, or if you are able to enter the CMOS setup change the first boot device to the floppy drive. It is possible that your CMOS settings were changed when you updated, so you if you can enter the CMOS setup then check your boot settings and anything that is part of the boot process.

I hope this helps you a little bit
Hey My Friend,

Don't ever update your BIOS unless you have problems with it, you have a big problem because your computer wont start. Clearing CMOS or pulling out your battery doesnt make any sense. If you have a back-up copy of your BIOS, just read your motherboard manual theres a guide in there to restore that previous BIOS...

Why don't new computers come with reset buttons anymore?

up until about the late 90s every computer or laptop I used had a reset button next to the power button which you could use to reboot the machine if needed. Nowadays I never see them on computers. Have manufacturers assumed computer's are so good nowadays they don't crash and never need to be rebooted? Cause that's certainly not true. Whenever my computer freezes nowadays I need to actually turn it off and back on again. Surely a reset button is more convenient?

Why don't new computers come with reset buttons anymore?free adware remover

There are two reasons. One, the result of restarting the computer can be achieved by using the power button and holding it down to shut down the computer and then using the same button to turn in back on. Why spend the money to have two buttons when you only need one. Two, The manufactures would rather you not constantly use the restart button to reboot the computer as this can damage hard-ware, and as there are a host of features now built into windows and other OS's that can recover the crash should it occur.

Why don't new computers come with reset buttons anymore?internet security 2006

Well actually technically we DO have restart buttons on our computers these days, they are just not hardware anymore, they are done though software. Although I am not sure why the actual restart button went away (a Tandy 1000? Was my first system, woot!), I would figure it would have something to do with the data being corrupted on the hard drive, typically restarting a computer (while the system is on) can interrupt a running service or process, even one that is writing data...the reset button did not test weither **** was running on the computer or not, today's software reset buttons do. As well as do you remember back in the days of Win 95-98, that stupid scandisk thing came up after you shut the computer down or restarted it incorrectly? Oh god that was such a *****.

If you have a problem assuming the compuer had crashed, try using cntl + alt + delete keys to see if you can end the process or program causing the crash, you may not have to restart! (Assuming your running a windows based box)
Because now u can use the power button as the "reset" button! Before, just shutting down computer was messing up the operating systems. It would usually loose data and crash. Now they are more sefisticated and more adjusted for that. So u can just unplug them or just push the power button to reset them.
so then you don't forget the computer history

One who is living a vegan lifestyle is more likely to avoid using such products, not usually vegetarians.

Of course you're certain to run into one of the anti-vegetarian/vegan communists that "thinks" they know all that will challenge this, but again-they eat meat, and choose to be ignorant and not do their homework before typing stuff on this forum, so they're comments are hardly worth reading or even taken seriously. People tend to like Dell computers......they're kind of expensive though.
Answer to # 1: There are a few. For a regular user the two main types would be laptops and desktops. A desktop usually stays in one place, but you get more bang for your buck.

A laptop is more expensive, but it is compact so you can carry it around anywhere. I goto college, so i prefer a laptop.

Answer # 2: Yes, you can buy computers all ready to go (based on your budget) from alot of retailers. Here is a simple list:

Dell

Compaq / HP

Toshiba

gateway

Answer # 3: There really is no best.. Just go to the sites of the companies listed above and see what you can get for the money you're willing to spend.

Joining two computers through the router?

I recently bought a wired router ( not wireless) , so that I can use the internet on both my desktop computers. The computers can connect to the internet fine but I can not share files between the two computer. I tired setting up a home network using the network setup wizard but that did not do anything

Both computers should be running the Client for Microsoft Windows.

Do a right click on the properties of your network.

If you don't see the Client there, add it with the add button down below.

Enable file and printer sharing if it's not enabled.

Reboot and both computers and you should be good to go.

Good luck.

You probably can't do it with a simple hub. What you need is called a router. Your Internet device (cable modem, ADSL modem, whatever) will plug into the router's WAN port. Then all of your computers will plug into the LAN ports on the router. The router then shares the single Internet connection with all computers.

There are many different makes and models of routers available for home and small office use. Most of them are not too expensive. Below is a link to some examples.

you will need a router either wireless ot ethernet cable.hook up: internet%26gt;modem%26gt;router%26gt;pc's. If you choose wirless you need cards for your pc's. If you worried about interference go ethernet cable , must be straight not crossover.Network all the pc's so you can share files and one printer.
In your office, you will already have a Hub for your internet access. Plug in the additional computer to the hub with internet access.

How many users and computers is average for an IT Analyst?

I know this question is more complicated than it appears. Let me brake it down a little more. I am an IT Analyst (Systems Administrator) for my company. I am relatively new to this position\job field. I started in August after 5 years of communications experience in the AF.

I am soley responsible for X sites with the following number of users:

Headquarters: 40 users, 40 computers, 4 W2003 servers, 1 Linux Redhat firewall, 1 Linux Redhat virus wall.

Site A, 20 miles from HQ: 40 Users, 40 Computers, 2 W2003 servers

Site B %26 C, 350 miles from HQ: 12 users, 12 computers

In addition to those site, I am also the backup\assistant system administrator for our other subsiderary companies, each having about as many users and sites as mine.

I feel swamped; Average 50 to 60 hours a week.

Is this number of users\computers\sites common for an systems administrator? or does the workload seem like a lot because I am still wet behind the ears?

How many users and computers is average for an IT Analyst?free spyware remover

Yes, thats common. I currently service over 120 users and 40 servers solo, though all users are in the same "group" and are at a single site, including an external data centre. In my previous job I serviced over 90 users across 4 different companies not in our group.

I've found most companies expect the moon on a stick from their IT staff.

Are there computers both cheaper and better than XBox 360?

I'm in an argument that there are computers you can build or buy that are cheaper and better for gaming than the XBox 360. The argument is almost entirely spec related, and I'm quite confident there are better computers out there for a smaller price tag.

Can anyone give examples of computers than simply outspec the XBox for a lower price?

Are there computers both cheaper and better than XBox 360?free spyware

Yes there are the 360 is $399 + quick charger for $20 plus $100 for wifi + $200for hddvd.... The biggest hard drive you'll get is a120 and that is only iof you buy the elite for 479 so your total cost at the minimum will cost you $600 to $700 dollars for outdated dx 9 graphics and a motherboard with a 33% failure rate

so Right at this moment I am looking at a flier with a quad processor and 500 gig harddrive and a nvidia 8800 graphics card with 320gig independant memory ....THis computer comes preloaded with Vista TV tuner etc...... This computer is for sale for $589

THe same weekly paper has another computer for $399 with a nvidia 6150 graphics card..... and a dual core porcesor and a 250 gig hard drive...

Are there computers both cheaper and better than XBox 360?live update

Ha ha ha ha ha

dude nooo way, the xbox has three 3.2ghz processors, and an amazing ATI graphics card. When microsoft made the xbox, they struck an agreement with game developers stating that they would have to pay a certain amount of money to microsoft to develop games for the 360. Hence, they can afford to sell the 360 waaaay cheaper.

You need to do several things:

First make sure both computers have the same workgroup name. Right click on "My Computer" on each one, then under the "Computer Name" tab, select a workgroup name, ame name for each computer, but the "Computer Name" must be different.

Next go to Control Panel-%26gt;Windows Firewall and enable

"File and Printer Sharing"

Restart each computer and go to Start-%26gt;My network Places-%26gt;View Workgroup computers. both computers should show up on each computer.

if they don't and you are running an internet security program/firewall you will have to go into your firewall's settings and enable NetBios over TCP and you may have to go into the firewall's "Trusted" section on each computer and add the other computer as a "Trusted Computer"

The instructions would be to set the domain on the client machines. Which should all be the same.

Go into your Network Connections folder. Click on Setup a new Connection and the New Connection Wizard will appear. On the first page you are asked what you wish to do, select the option of an advanced connection. Follow the pages and ensure that the Workgroup is the same for each system, and that the computer names are different.

Do the same on the second computer and you will soon have a connection between the two computers where you can share data and printers if you wish to do that too. It is all very simple and easy to do when you use the Wizard.

You will eventually come to a page which asks if it is a virtual private network, select no. The next page asks who will be able to connect to the computer, select the account you wish to use on the other computer for file transfers. Finish up will each page it is pretty self explanatory.

I'll answer a few of these. No, there are not things on computers and the Internet for all ages. Definitely not. The opinions alone range from mild to completely racist on sites, which young minds aren't quite ready to handle. but the Internet is what gave me my future career that I want to attain. For a faster start-up, you should make sure that none of your programs are set to start up when you turn your computer on. An example of this is AIM or Yahoo Widgets, these will dramatically slow down the start up . For shutdown, I'm not entirely sure, but your computer might be set to automatically check for/install updates when you shut down.

Can 2 computers on network without using routers the ip address 172.17.4.1 for 1stpc172.18.4.2 2nd p

can i connect two computers on network without using routers suppose the ip address are 172.16.4.1 for 1st computer and 172.18.4.2 for the 2nd computer with a cross cable

Can 2 computers on network without using routers the ip address 172.17.4.1 for 1stpc172.18.4.2 2nd pc?internet

yes. i do it all the time to transfer files. just make sure your computers have the same workgroup name. then have the same subnet. so basically use an ip like 192.168.50.1 and 192.168.50.5. now make sure you create folders or make certain folders "shared" or else you wont be able to swap or access files on each others computer.

then hookup them together with a crossover cable. incidentally this is how you connect a xbox or ps2 to a computer too.

your setup didnt work because your subnets are different. only make the last digit, different from each other. the other 3 numbers should be the same. 172.17.4.x

use 10.10.10.x or 192.168.1.x, those are pretty common for home use.

p.s. just use the default gateway and mask. just do what i said, you dont need to fuss around with te other settings, such as gateway, etc.

Can 2 computers on network without using routers the ip address 172.17.4.1 for 1stpc172.18.4.2 2nd pc?network

Better for this small a network is to use addresses 192.168.0.x with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. this is a more standard sort of setup.
yes they can communicate...give the 2 computers IP's like 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.11 with same subnet mask values 255.255.255.0
That would work as long as you used a proper netmask. Netmask 255.252.0.0 would cover 172.16.0.0 (network IP) through 172.19.255.255 (broadcast IP).

Or netmask 255.240.0.0 would cover that whole private IP range from 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255.

Although it would be simpler if the first 3 octets were the same and just digit after the last dot differed (like 172.16.4.1 and 172.16.4.2, which would work with netmask 255.255.255.0)
ya, go to help in windows xp,

type "null modem ".

routers are needed in network to network connection.
Yes, but make sure your subnet mask is 255.0.0.0.

Physics in Computers?

I'm writing a term paper on the physics in computers but the damn search engine keeps giving me links to physics simulators for the computer. It's high school physics, so quantum references are not necessary, but some information on how the computer is actually wired and functions through physics would be greatly appreciated.

Physics in Computers?kawasaki

The problem with "the damn search engine" (it's a poor craftsman who blames his tools) is that computers are complex engineered systems, and physics only deals with elementary forms of matter. Anything else is too complex to deal with at that level, so you won't find much. A good tongue-in-cheek rule of thumb is that if it's bigger than a molecule and smaller than a planet, a physicist doesn't care about it.

The key component of a modern digital computer processor is the silicon transistor, so that's one thing you could research in terms of a physics project related to computers. Another might be the magnetic domains used to store information on hard disks. Or optical refraction for CD's. Or, for futuristic computers, Google the esoteric physics of Qubits in quantum computers.

How is an ISP able to give out differnet IP addresses to computers in the same area?

I've only heard that all computers that are in the same area are all given the same IP address. When one computer's IP address changed, they've all changed. When one computer is banned from a server, then any computer within that one computer's location are all banned from the same server too. Getting on a different computer to try to evade the ban is considered ban evasion. However some people say that certain areas like schools and libraries for example, their ISP provides different IP addresses to all the other computers there. Some people are able to do this at home like I saw in the 2nd answer to the last question I answered. Is there some kind of special Internet Provider that can provide our computers a couple different IP addresses? I don't want just 1 computer limited to where they can go on and what they can do there because of 1 computer's stupidity. Please help me so I'll remember how to give all computers their own IP address in the future and so I can avoid all of this.

How is an ISP able to give out differnet IP addresses to computers in the same area?ktm

Here is part of your answer. I don't remember the finite details of who has the over all control of IP's. But I know that companies, schools, etc can buy them in blocks and that is how your ISP has them to give out....

Each modem connection from the ISP is given an IP. You can pay for an additional IP address or get another account and modem. Inside of the home network the IP's are usually handed out via the router (which is the 192.168.xxx.xxx range) Those IP's are not public.

why is there a black '!' mark in a yellow triangle near 2 internet computers in right corner on computer and can you help to get it off, when i hover over it it sayd this :

local area connection

speed: 10.0 mbps

status: limited or no connectivity

Computers, internet, connect, HELP!?matchless

If you are using wireless for those computers, then the network signal is not enough for connectivity. That's all that means. Need some details as to what your set up is.

If you are not using wireless in any way, shape or form, then right-click the icon select Open Network Connections. Then select wireless network, right-click again and disable the network. You may have to go through the Network Connection Properties to get this shut down and remove icon.

Trying to do a Repair will not do any good if you do not have a signal strong enough to connect computers to. Nor will anything else you try to do, resetting a router if you have one, etc., until the signal strength is enough to connect.

lol same **** happened to me when I got my laptop. The thing I done wrong, was the settings for my router wsn't right, so I had to put in the exact detailts about the router into your computer e.g. WEP code, make sure thats right. Normally it comes up now and again for me, but all I do is reset my router and that instantly fixes it. Make sure ur WEP settings to your router is right, or make sure you are not picking up another router. Good Luck
There's a problem with your router or modem.

Networking the computers and laptops in my house.?

to go into more detail, all the computers and laptops in my house are basic and have windows XP. the computer in my living room is connected to the internet (road runner not dial-up sorry i dont know the actual name for it).

Anyways it is hooked up to a linksys wireless router so i can use my laptop in my room. my brother just got his computer and he wants to get on the internet with it. can i install a wireless card onto it or use a wirless usb adatpter (if they sell those)?

thank you in advance.

Networking the computers and laptops in my house.?mcaffee

Yes, you can. I would suggest that you use a usb wifi adapter if you're not comfortable opening a computer to install an expansion card.

If your internet connection is coming directly into your PC, rather than the router, you'll need to make some changes. The best way would be simply to hook the internet directly into the router. Alternatively, it is possible to use your XP PC as a gateway, but I don't recommend this approach.

Assume two computers are using time division multiplexing to take turns in sending 512 byte packets

Assume two computers are using time division multiplexing to take turns in sending 512 byte packets over a shared channel that operates at 40000 bits per second. If the hardware takes 10msec after one computer stops sending before the other can begin, how long it will take for each of the computers

to send 1megabyte of a file?

Assume two computers are using time division multiplexing to take turns in sending 512 byte packets over a shamicrosoft office

Each computer will be sending 1024^2/512 = 2048 packets. Therefore:

Transfer time for each computer

= (1024^2 * 8 / 20000)s + 10ms * (2048-1)

= 419.4304 s + 0.01 * 2047

= 439.9 s

Has apple's Mac computers popularity grown/more market share or is it on the decline?

A family friend said that if it wasn't for the ipod then the apple computer wouldn't be around still. I was under the impression the computer sales were increasing steadily before the ipod was released? Has the apple inc's computer (mac computers) share gone up or stayed the same or even decreased?

Has apple's Mac computers popularity grown/more market share or is it on the decline?microsoft

Apple's sales are increasing at a much faster rate than the computer industry as a whole. They have been selling record breaking numbers of Macs year on year for the last several years. Recently Apple's stock value rose higher than Dell's where they are now the #3 computer company.

The iPod certainly got Apple noticed and had people looking at their equipment again, but things were improving long before that when Steve Jobs returned to the company.

The original Imac was probably their biggest success since the original Macintosh, and that was long before the iPod.

There are a couple of reasons for the name change to Apple, Inc. Firstly, Apple decided that if it couldn't break Microsoft's stranglehold in the industry then it would create a whole new market based around the Macintosh as the digital hub of a series of lifestyle products. They don't only work with Mac's but they often do more, and work flawlessly with them. Secondly, Apple had a long running dispute with the Beatles over copyright issues with the Apple company name. Recently those differences were settled out of court to the satisfaction of both groups involved, and gave Apple full control over their name. The change reflects the changing product range and because there were no longer any legal barriers to do so.

I want to learn computers?

Well I want to learn about computers. My dad is like a contractor/engineer and he works with PCs alot. I also want to become an astronaut and they choose people who have experience in tech(or something). So what should I do? In my high school, theres a course called AP Computer Science and also AP Comp. Sci. 2(but u have to take 1 first). On the diploma requirements, the career tech recommends these classes, so i'm afraid ill be taking stupid classes that won't help me get into a really good college. Should i take these courses? i want to but i'd like to know the potential outcomes.

part 2. would a course like Comp. Science teach you how to create websites, flash, etc. or just programming?

part 3. how do computers work???? not the wires and monitor stuff, but HOW?? how the freakin hell did someone invent a computer????????? if you really think about it, its near impossible!

I want to learn computers?moto guzzi

Actually your over complicating things, first of all.

Yes take the courses, yes they are blow off courses but do them anyway. If you want to impress a good college admissions offers do projects on the side.

Based on what ever you want to do, if its software. Start learning programming, build some productive software.

If its hardware \ engineering, get into robotics, there are some small robotic sets.

I don't know about you, but my high school had a after after school ap program [you needed ap physics to get in] you make robots, an do other engineering projects (Funny thing was, I went to a Medical Highschool)

Share files on two computers connected wirelessly?

Hi..

I have 2 computers connected to a wirelless router and is using internet without any problems. I also have 2 printers connected to each computer. Now i need want to share files on these two computers and also share the printer. That is, if I wanted to print using the printer connected to another computer, how do I go about doing this?

Share files on two computers connected wirelessly?network security

Go to the Network Setup Wizard in your control panel.

Share files on two computers connected wirelessly?norton internet security

How expereianced are you with computers? It's not real easy..... OK... On both computers go to the control panel and click one "PRINTERS AND SCANNERS" ( You have to do this on each computer) Right click on the printer and look for "Sharing" click on the "Share this printer" give it a name if you want like Printer 1 if you like. do the same on the other computer. Then Click "Apply". and go from there. Make sure you have you folders "

shared" and your network is secure!! WPA or WEP at least! Make sure your computers have the same network or workgroup name As in "my Network" or "MSHOME". Whatever you want ,just have to be the same!! You should be able to go to "MY NETWORK PALACES" and then "look" for each computer on the network then search for the printers. Click on them one at a time and you computer will tell you it will need to install drivers for each one and follow from there. See ! Not hard at all!! Yes I mossed some stuff but I figure you can figure it out or someone with correct me. Hey I've been awake for 33 hrs!!
If you are running Windows XP, the easiest way to do this is through the Network Setup Wizard under Control Panel -%26gt; Network Connections.
you should enable "file and printer sharing" on both computers.

that should work if you could ping each other's IP address
well if ur printers are bluetooth enabled, u can set them for sharing in the Networking Wizard if u are using XP or Vista. well that should work unless u might have to make an wired connection between the computers.

I want to hook up four computers on a network and create a hot spot (wi-fi) at the same time.?

Restaurant:I have 3 windows 98 computers with touch screens and one office computer with XP home. I would like to wire all the computers into a wireless router for networking a POS point of sale software. Is this possible? And can I have the pos software just on the office computer and have the other computers access the software or should the software be installed on each one. Any reccomendations on routers or installation is appreciated. I would like to keep cost at a minimum.

I was thinking of getting a netgear wireless N router to do this.

I want to hook up four computers on a network and create a hot spot (wi-fi) at the same time.?network

You will need wireless N network adapter cards in each computer. Check the compatibility with Windows 98 before you purchase the router because you may not be able to find drivers for your network cards that support Win 98. You can still use Wireless G if it is incompatible.

The POS software depends on the license. Some POS applications only work for one user.

I want to hook up four computers on a network and create a hot spot (wi-fi) at the same time.?norton

Sounds good, biggest problem would be security across the network and possibly throughput.

Windows 98 can be a bit buggy with wireless.
easy etherenet cables to all and the router
Here's some guide regarding networking your computers for restaurant, and an added link for becoming a hotspot operator!

Most POS systems I know were the database was centered on one computer (server), and each computer were installed softwares to access the central database. You may inquire at one link below regarding POS systems.
Get the N router, but N is higher priced now. You can use wireless and wired at the same time. Set up security on each computer so you dont get unauthorized access.

Why dont moniters work with my computers?

I power on the computer (each one at different times) with 5 or so moniters (and 5 or so computers) the computers power on, laser on mouse goes on, lights on keyboard go on, and moniter light goes green ( or blue depending on the moniter) and then after a second or two goes orange (meaning it is off). If it were a freak occurance, i would not care, just use a different computer, but theis is with 5 or so computers. I've heard it could be power supply, ram, fried mother borad, and numerous other things. Does anyone know for sure what is is?

Why dont moniters work with my computers?nortan

That is rather odd if all 5 monitors are not working. Did you happen to get 5 old computers? They could be damaged surplus machines.

You could have several problems going on, many that you referenced. You could have a bad power supply, a damaged motherboard, a bad cable, a bad video card, etc. Maybe these units were all damaged by a lightening storm or some type of electrical spike?

First, I would take one of the monitors and put it on a computer you know absolutely works. You can try booting up in Windows Safe mode by pressing F8 before Windows loads. This would load your default VGA driver and other basic drivers. If you see that your monitor then works, it could be a driver problem or video card issue.

It's hard to say what exactly is wrong as it can be a number of things.

Good Luck!

Why dont moniters work with my computers?noton

why 5 PC's? I don't know. However, if the monitor shuts off after boot, it has to be with the video signal. Meaning the video card or cables. (I have seen bent/missing pins) Reseat the video card/try different pci slot.
try system restore
Maybe the source of your electricity is unstable or fluctuating. Have it checked by an electrician.

Im putting together a booklet for my mum on how to use a pc. I need some website on which i can find information for beguinners. I have currently read the "which Magazine" booklet on computers for beguinners and also "computers for dummies" which have helped me slightly.

I am also making a disk with several ways to do things, all recorded with www.hypercam.com's camera,

Can anyone post me some websites which provide tips for beguinners on using a pc.. basic functions and commands etc!

Very gratefull for any help!

Upgrading my computers video card?

I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-core Processor 3800+, 250 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive, 2048 MB DDR Dual-channel memory, NVIDIA GeForce 6100 video card.

I am not super good with computers and don't have much experience installing new components into the computers and so I wanted to know if any NVIDIA GeForce 7800 video cards (Under $400) will be compatible with my computer, and if so what else do i need to run it, such as power supply that meets the cards needs, or any cooling devices, or more memory or anything like that.

Thanks

Upgrading my computers video card?norton 2008

It really depends how much you are wanting to spend and what sort of PSU you have.

For under 200, you're probably better off with the radeon x1600 series or the geforce 7600 series.

For 250 to 300 I'd go with the 7800 GT or 7900 (7900 GT runs more or less equivalent to 7800 GTX) or the x1800.

If you want to buy the farm, go for the x1900 xt or the 7950 GX2/7900GTX.

Beware that a lot of these take up a good amount of power (seen below):

http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/7900%...

Your processor will take up about 170W at load itself. So you're probably looking at wanting at minimum a 400W power supply for the midrange of these cards and maybe more for the big guns or SLI/Crossfire caliber solutions.

As for the choice between ATI and Nvidia, well right now the prices are very similar and the performance is also quite similar. I don't want to say one is better than the other, because really they are not. Right now though the ATI cards tend to take a little more power on average and run at higher temperatures.

The easiest way to do this would be to setup a VPN connection from your "truck" to the office network:

If you will be accessing a windows server at the office then follow this guide:

http://www.howtonetworking.com/VPN/2003v...

Note: If your using active directory on your network you will have to enable dial in for remote access under the specific user account.

If you will be accessing a workstation at the office(windows xp) then use this guide:

http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking...

To setup the truck computer to establish a vpn connection follow this guide:

Your best bet is to talk directly to Blizzard. They are trying to keep farming down, so it wouldn't surprise me to know there is a limit on how many CPUs per account.

you would have to contact blizzard development about that, i did contact them once, and they activated the key code for an additional computer, try asking them.

Can three computers access DSL high speed Internet service all at the same time?

We are dropping our home phone service in favor of DSL which will cost about $40 per month and we have three computers hooked up to a wired router. The DSL will be wired as well.

Thanks for your help.

Yes you can. You will need a router. The router connects to the DSL modem. Each computer will then connect to the router.

Can three computers access DSL high speed Internet service all at the same time?software

As long as your ISP doesn't prevent it, sure. You get a modem/router with enough ports and run cables to all the machines. Or you add a wireless router and wireless adapters to the machines, and everyone uses the same connection, including your neighbors if you don't secure the connection.
Yes you can hook as many computer as you wish to a DSL/Cable connection via router. You can use hardwired or use wireless . Wireless would be the easiest but more expensive. You can pick up a good wireless router for around $35-$100 depending on what you are using it for and the wireless cards or USB wireless connnections for each computer for around $25-$80 each. I would hard wire the main computer where the DSL and router are and wireless connect the others in the house. I have it that way but I hardwired my whole house with 2 ethernet jacks in each room and have a wireless network setup also. My computer workshop in the backyard is over 100ft from the house and I get 5 bars and excellent strength via a wireless booster. But it just depends on how much you are willing to spend...Thanks
yea u can. on at%26ts dsl service you can have a small home network which would be up to 10 pc's you can purch w/ built in router from them or just get the modem and hook it up to your existing router. you cant order the "dry loop dsl" which doesnt require a phone line over the internet. u'll need to call 1877uaskatt for availability in ur area. if you decide to go with at%26t , use referral code mp4341
You will need a dsl modem/router, this can handle much more than you need.

Assuming they are running XP then go to Control Panel %26gt; Network Connections %26gt; run the home or small office networking wizard on all machines. Make sure you'reconnected to theinternet and theprinters are turned on first.

Computers %26 Printers problem?spyware removal

In the main computer where the printer is installed, just go to the Printer folder inside of Control Panel. Right click your All in one printer and then Click Sharing. Click on Share this printer in the window that opens and then hit OK.

Get the IP address of your computer, go to Start, Run, type "cmd" enter, type "ipconfig" enter. Write down where it says "Local Area Connection" IP address: "numbers with dots". After this, move to the computer without a printer.

In the other computer, go to Start, Run, type "\\ipaddress\" where ipaddress are the numbers of the 1st computer. When a windows opens asking for a user name and password input those credentials from your computer. If it doesn't ask it will be even better. Now with this command you will open a folder and the printer will be there. Double click the printer and now the 2nd computer will be able to use it.

BTW, both computers have to be in the same WORKGROUP. to check this: Right click My Computer icon on the desktop, go to properties, Computer name tab. There you can see the WORKGROUP name and even change it.

Hmm, good interesting question. I use software for web filtering in my home, and it does more than that. It's called FreeProxy. It allows you to setup a proxy server in your home (a server that handles web connections). There is a feature in it that allows you to use Autodial or something similar that will automatically dial a connection out when another computer requests to go online. I like the program but haven't used it for dialup.

It's also good because you can set up a local Cache, so if you like to go on Google or watch the same YouTube video, once its loaded once, it'll stay loaded "locally" for all the computers to watch quickly instead of loading from the internet every time.

Best of all: It's 100% free- only one version.

http://www.handcraftedsoftware.org/index...
What you would have to do is set up ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the dial-up connection, and share it via ethernet using ethernet cable to all the other machines. You'll need a switch or a hub, NOT a router. The computer with the dial up connection will be acting as a router, and will need to be kept online for the other machines to use it. This setup is not ideal for most users, the only reason I know about it is because this is how I did my initial setup, a long time ago.

Right click each my computer and set the computer identification to a simple computer name each, and all of them to the same simple workgroup name. On the server machine set up a new folder, preferably on the c: drive direct for network use. Right click it and set it shared. Create users matching the users of your other machines, with the same passwords, then set the security to this folder to allow these users full access. Then set the exception for file and printer sharing in the firewall. You can then browse to the server and it's folder/s in your network places.

I have a large network of computers with an ip range from 10.2.148.0 - 10.2.150.255. I want to be able to ping every computer in that address poll and then here is the important part

To output any computer that responds to a ping to a text file with just the IP address of a computer with each additional ip address on a separate line. Ideally this could be done using a command line but I have no idea how to do this. At the moment I can only ping one computer and when I output it to a text file using %26gt; test.txt I get the ping response and lots of other information which is not needed.

I really hope this makes sense as I have a big project relying on your answers.

Please help

Many Thanks

Chris

Theirs lots of things you can do, most of the solutions will require a little coding on your part and no need to use 3rd party software either.

Do you possess any coding or scripting skills?

How do I find out what computers are turned on in my network LAN?spyware

use angyIP scanner, this is what I use, it will tell you whats up and dead and appurtenant information.

Dont know how to add additional comments so I am editing this.

Anyway, First of all export your query to a TXT file and then edit the tope header junk (all the date and stuff) and save it. Then import it to EXCEL using the import external data wizard and except the defaults, it should see that its being delimited by large spaces. Once you get it into EXCEL you can sort and modify the data you need, IE IP to HOSTs and those that are dead and alive. Just make sure when you sort in EXCEL you select ALL and sort the entire worksheet.

hope that helps.
you could just make a dos batch file. If you don't know how to then you probably read up on that.

or you could code something in C that calls the "ping" command + the ip's etc...

someone probably has a 3rd party software for doing it.
Angry IP scanner is a sweet little tool. Thanks Slick, for mentioning it. Only problem is that the link provided didn't work. But I found it here... http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/An...

Connecting 2 computers, failed internet.?

Well, i got 2 computers, both running windows xp. I want to connect them both together with a cross over cable. It works with sharing files and ect but the internet connection won't work. I only got 1 port for my ethernet cross over cable on my main computer to plug in. My modem that supplies me with internet, broadband adsl 2+. has an ethernet and usb, i use the usb but it doesn't work and doesn't provide both computers with internet.

Connecting 2 computers, failed internet.?noton

Hi Donny,,, the cabling part is alright , its just the configuration part , that's needs to be worked on.,

in your case you can get the Internet working on both of your machines using an ICS ( Internet connection sharing) , that's is inbuilt in Ur PC.

HOw to do that: On ur main pc,,,,u have two lan connection , one is uSb one and another is Ethernet port ... which has cross cable going to another of ur pc.

Go to the network connections, where all ur connections are listed,. Double click the usb lan connection. go to advanced settings,, there u will get the option of ICS, enable it by putting a check mark on it....

This Wud enable internet sharing in ur pc..... Ur other pc wud be able to get the ineternet.. Renew the ip using ipconfig /renew command in command prompt.

let me know , if this works..

Connecting 2 computers, failed internet.?stinger

add another NIC card to your main computer to be connected to your cable modem..... Thats it. and dont forget to connect the two computers with crossover cable. If it doesnt work ditch the cable modem.
This is going to be a struggle to make it work. Just go buy a 4 port router from your local Radio Shack or computer store for about $30 and connect the computers together to each other and the internet with the router.. a lot easier!

Here is one for $20 plus shipping.. http://www.outletpc.com/c3432.html

Do quantum computers exist?

I read an article about 8 years ago in Scientific American. That one day computers could look like the cup of coffee on our desks. They called them quantum computers. What happened? Is there such a thing as a quantum computer? And if there is .... does it look like that cup of coffee that is on my desk?

Do quantum computers exist?panda

Quantum effect circuit chips do exist. Not much outside the laboratory though.

The speed is high but the density needs improvement.

It looks like this is more in the realm of 10-20 years to functional.

And like 30 to a coffee cup...

Personally I think they should all be formed like a magic 8 Ball as early result will be about as good but exponentially faster.

Hey it took 50 years to go from the Wright bros to landing on the moon give it a little time.

Do quantum computers exist?suzuki

Ummmm, Ive never heard of quantum computers.

we are years (ie centuries) away from harnessing the random computational power of coffee. We would have to be able to precisely manipulate every single atom of a liquid and then find a way of changing that information into useful data.

I dont think you will see it operational in the next hundred years if at all.
Actually, there are people currently working on quantum computers, but it will be some time before a practical one can be constructed, and chances are it won't look like a cup of coffee (perhaps a piece of toast - maybe). The interest in them comes from the fact that if they can be constructed, they should be able to solve extraordinarily complex problems in far less time than normal computers. This is becuase instead of using bits, the normal unit of memory in current computers, they will use "qubits". The difference between them is that a bit is assigned a value of either 0 or 1. A qubit, on the otherhand, exists in a superposition - being both a 1 and 0 at the same time. The main problem with quantum computing is preventing the collapse of the superpostion, caused by the qubit interacting with other particles (a process called "decoherence"). And the solution to this problem is probably ways off.
Dont know, I once electrocuted myself while making toast.

I burnt my arm, but the toast was fine so don't worry.

Computers are taking away from literary skills. How can we solve this?

Again, computers in schools are taking away from the needed literary skills. Does anyone have a solution? I have found a few, such as:

*Complete new crop of learning software

*Use computers only during recess or relaxation periods.

Both of these ideas are great, but I am also looking at middle and high school students affected by this.

This is for a Problem-Solution Essay, and I am stuck. Help!

How can 2 out of 3 computers be able to connect to the internet?

I've got a network at home using 3 computers, but only 2 computers are able to connect to the internet and the other one cant using a router. I have 2 macs and a pc desktop. The only way I can get the one computer that doesnt connect to my network to work is by connecting it either directly to the modem disabling all other computer connections or tapping into my neighbor's network. How can I get this computer to work with my network like the other 2 that are already working?

How can 2 out of 3 computers be able to connect to the internet?photoshop

Since you said you could connect to your neighbor's network, I'm assuming you have a wireless network.

On the computer that won't connect:

1. Distance/interference?

2. Any firewalls?

On the router:

1. Any MAC or packet filters?

2. Updated Drivers?

Set up a router with two computers? gateway question??

hi i have a router and two computers, both computers connect to the router, but can't ping each other..

the router has two ethernet ports, port1 has an ip address of 192.168.1.2 and port2 has 192.168.2.1 ... not sure if this is right....

okay computer A has ip address of 192.168.1.2 and computer B has ip address of 192.168.1.3 and both use the same gatway which is 192.168.2.1

i really need some help on this one, im trying to get both computer to ping each other, but really have no idea, am just guessing what i need the gatways to be set to....

any help would awsome, cheers :)

Set up a router with two computers? gateway question??pop up blocker

I dont know why your IP addresses would be in different ranges if they are connected to the same router....

Your routers IP address is 192.168.2.1 so it should have a built in DHCP server that assignes the computers an automatic IP address in the sam range, something between 192.168.2.2 and 192.168.2.254.

Also your computers should both have file and printer sharing enabled, Make the workgroup name on the computers the same and then place the IP addresses of the computers in each of the computers firewall trusted zone.

Set up a router with two computers? gateway question??systemworks

The router is a router, not a network hub. But make your PC IP addresses very different, say 192.168.2.10 and 192.168.2.11. Make the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and set each PCs gateway as 192.168.2.1. I don't know if this will work but it's worth a try.

How can I hook up 2 computers to wifi with one computer not having an ethernet port?

I have 2 computers in different rooms of my house. I have a wireless B router, a DSL modem, and a wireless B USB Network Adapter.

The problem is that one of my computers (the one that I hooked up the DSL to primarily, as the other computer isn't near a phone jack) doesn't have an ethernet port. I messed with the motherboard and needless to say, it's busted. Anyway, I have all of those things and no matter what I do, it's always one or the other computer that doesn't get the internet.

I hooked my DSL up using USB connection, but the router needs ethernet.

Help!

Pick up a multi port USB adapter. it turns one USB port into 4, then plug USB wifi adapter into one of the new ports.

I'm not sure I understand the question much, but if all you need is an ethernet port, just purchase a NIC at your local PC shop. They are fairly cheap and easy to install
Yo said that only one of your computers conect, one or the other.... I think that your wireless router is configure to only allow one conection... check on yor router manual how to change that

Computers for sale. in so. cali?

Well anyone interested in the computers I am trying to sell, then let me know, but only if your serious. I posted a question earlier today and got a bogus answer from some little kid. I guess 12 yr olds could be playing around thinking they are cool. Anyway I do have 2 computers that I need to sell. One is brand new and one I bought 4 months ago. Also one came with a monitor, and the brand new one didn't. It has the tower keyboard and mouse. So if anyone is interested but for real, then let me know and I can email you or we could chat so I can give you all the details. thanks very much appreciated.

If you don't want bogus answers, don't use the wrong tool for the job you're trying to do. This is OBVIOUSLY not the forum for buying and selling your stuff. Try eBay. Abusing this forum for what you're trying to use it for is...well...pretty low.

Naive. If you have a problem with your PC I can help you. Or I can sell you 4 computers I have. But Don't try to sell here anything in here, I'm the only one who can do that. I'm the one and only salesman in here. Go to somewhere else because this site is mine.

Building Custom Computers?

Hi, I am 15 years old, and very good with computers, I am thinking about building custom computers for people, as a way to earn a bit of money. so i have a few questions for you:

1. Would you trust a 15yo to buid a computer for you?

2. How much would you pay for the labour? Not parts

3. How long would you want it done in

4. Would charging extra for support after 2 months be ok and how much?

Thanks!

Building Custom Computers?software

1. I would not personally trust a 15 year old to build my computer. I am also very good with computers and have the background to build them, but there is just too much stuff that can be ruined without a college degree.

2. I would pay about....10-20 dollars an hour.

3. I would probably want it done within a month or two.

4. If i were you, I wouldn't do that. Just let them have their computer and take it back to you if they have problems. Problems in the computer are not always fixable without high charges, and it is hard to identify computer hardware problems if theres no way of testing them.

Building Custom Computers?vincent

1. I would NOT TRUST a 15 yo to build my machine

2. I would probably pay $15-25 per hr. (since he or she's 15)

3. Within a weekend.

4. DEFINITELY NOT, considering the likelihood of error in the building process

Are our computers pre programed to break down?

I repair computers for a living and I wish they were pre-programmed to break down as this would bring me huge amounts of business. But I don't think they are.

Lots of the Windows stuff is dated with the date the file in question was created so that could easily be 2003 or earlier.

How to computers actually work?

how do the people that build computers store all the information and programmes in the microchip or whatever its called in the computer? i dont understand how the whole computer works on just a bunch of wires and microchips, and how everything is stored in them.

How to computers actually work?spyware remove

There's a big question :)

It's all built up from pulses of electricity.

The main parts are:

cpu: "brain" which has lots and lots of little gates that take two pulses of electricity (or one pulse and one non-pulse, or two non-pulses) and spits out a resulting pulse or no pulse. Kind of like analyzing two flipped coins.

But there are thousands of these little gates, and they can analyze things very, very quickly.

Really basic software uses these gates to do things like add up numbers. Then more advanced software does lots and lots of adding up to draw a dot on the screen. Then more advanced programs again draw a smiley face, and so on.

RAM: kind of like a scribble pad to draw all your sums on. Running programs live here, and when you turn off your computer, it's like erasing a blackboard.

Hard Drive: Place to store the calculating programs and their results etc. When you turn off the computer, everything survives. These work by storing everything again as an on or off pulse, stored magnetically on some special metal. Running a magnet over a hard drive will completely stuff it up.

How to computers actually work?virus protection

A computer isn't all one piece, it is dozens of smaller parts that have only one function.

They are joined together at the BIOS chip which acts like a switch/regulator,controlling the impulses to each simpler device.

The BIOS answers only to the processor, which is the most complicated part of all.

It is the King of the unit, the heart and soul one might say.

It tells the BIOS what signal to send, when and at what voltage.

Computers, file recovery??

my brother just put together a powerpoint for school but the computer shut off for some reason. (maybe because of static electricity cuz it was sitting on the floor) But i know there is some way of recovering it even if you dont save it. New computers have a way of remembering it in some way. Does anyone know what im talking about? if you do can you please let me know how i can recover it?

Computers, file recovery??spyware remover

open powerpoint. it will show you the list of recovered files. recover it from there...

Computers, file recovery??virus removal

hmm...personally i think its not worth the trouble trying to recover it, but http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ has a program where you can get deleted files from your computer. You have to buy it though...so its really not worth it if you're just recovering one powerpoint. Also, you can go to programs-%26gt;accessories-%26gt;System tools-%26gt;System Restore and if it was a recent document or blah blah something then u can recover it easily, but it is very sensitive and it will not just recover one thing but things ahead of it or in that present day.

HP desktop computers, are they any good?!?!?!?

My old computer died

I was thinking about getting a Dell, but worried about all the bad hype it always gets.

I want a computer to last another 5-6 years like my old 1

Are HP computers a quality brand are they reliable have they got a good reputation

I was looking at the HP pavilion slimline with the screen

Thanks for any answers.

HP desktop computers, are they any good?!?!?!?spyware

first, you get what you paid for... and it has bery little to do with brands. if you buy a cheap computer it will be cheap regardless of who made it. HP is a good brand. one advantage is the there are repair center all over that will be able to handle warranty repair.

now because computer are more powerful, have more parts and run hotter, they don't last as long. why? because people don't give them the correct maintanace. you need to make sure the inside of your computer is dust free and the fans are clean. if dust builds up, it acts like insulation and causes the computer to run hot, possibly overheat and then fail. so keep the computer clean and you should be fine.

HP desktop computers, are they any good?!?!?!?virus scan

To answer your question i had a Dell and threw it in the garbage seriously!!! lol I went and bought a HP desktop and like it. I think its perfect for the price. I personally like Gateway but couldn't afford it. Anyway I liked my HP I went and got A HP notebook as well and Love it!!!

So hope that helps!!
HP Computer systems has been around FOR EVER. I have owned several in the past years, from older machines running Windows 95 and 98 right through to a brand new rig running Vista. EXCELLENT computers and are even a very popular choice in their slimline and thinclient solutions for businesses.

On the same note COMPAQ was acquired by HP about 5 years ago or earlier, so both offer the same reasonably priced goods with the same quality.

Highly recommend.

Computers and interior design?

how can computers help me in interior design ,which are short courses one can take up so that i can make my designs on computers

Computers and interior design?stinger

Interior Designers and Architects been using CAD based software such as AutoDesk AutoCAD for nearly a decade. You need to learn AutoCAD and later if you have time 3D MAX or MAya. In that you can create exact 3D models of home and office interiors that you imagined and transform them from paper to 3D. This also works well when pleasing customers through a preview of what they are getting and can also ask for minor tweaks here and there. Makes your job a lot easier.

Computers and designing go hand-in-hand now a days. You have many softwares for interior designing. Try Google Sketch for simple 3d modelling or the AutoCAD for advanced modelling. Pro-E,Catia,SolidWorks are a few of the softwares available for 3D modelling.

I don't see why you are using NFS, this is a Unix protocol, so it adds significant overhead to a Windows system. As for speech, you need a server to implement this, easier is to both subscribe to Skype, which is a free provider, and then link through it.
The most simple and easy way to do a voice chat is to use Microsoft NetMeeting.

Networking multiple computers?

I don't know much about networking and thought I would ask this question, although it may sound trivial to most.

Basically I am wondering if I connect my laptop and desktop to a linksys modem box, can I use the programs from computer to computer? For example, I have Photoshop on my desktop and don't want to place it on my laptop so can I network my computers so I can use the program like this?

If using programs is not possible I am curious if networking is mainly for sharing documents?

Thank you for the help!

Networking multiple computers?symantic

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/home-n...

Networks can do all kinds of things

they CAN be used to share documents. I share movies within my network. I can watch any of my movies from any computer. its really nice. I bought a vid card with tv out. so they're pumped to my big ol TVs.

Some networks allow you to use the CPUs together. So I could have 3 computers working (2 dual cpus and 1 single) thats 5 CPUs) on one project. Helps me with speeding up 3D rendering. You need to learn linux though. Its the only OS that can do it as far as I know.

I also share the signle cable internet connection with all three computers. Sweet.

but to get more direct to your question, Yes. program sharing is possible. (I know there are other ways, but I can't recall off the top of my head)
