I was thinking about getting a Dell, but worried about all the bad hype it always gets.

I want a computer to last another 5-6 years like my old 1

Are HP computers a quality brand are they reliable have they got a good reputation

first, you get what you paid for... and it has bery little to do with brands. if you buy a cheap computer it will be cheap regardless of who made it. HP is a good brand. one advantage is the there are repair center all over that will be able to handle warranty repair.

now because computer are more powerful, have more parts and run hotter, they don't last as long. why? because people don't give them the correct maintanace. you need to make sure the inside of your computer is dust free and the fans are clean. if dust builds up, it acts like insulation and causes the computer to run hot, possibly overheat and then fail. so keep the computer clean and you should be fine.

To answer your question i had a Dell and threw it in the garbage seriously!!! lol I went and bought a HP desktop and like it. I think its perfect for the price. I personally like Gateway but couldn't afford it. Anyway I liked my HP I went and got A HP notebook as well and Love it!!!

HP Computer systems has been around FOR EVER. I have owned several in the past years, from older machines running Windows 95 and 98 right through to a brand new rig running Vista. EXCELLENT computers and are even a very popular choice in their slimline and thinclient solutions for businesses.

On the same note COMPAQ was acquired by HP about 5 years ago or earlier, so both offer the same reasonably priced goods with the same quality.

Highly recommend.

I have one computer, my wife's, upstairs, and my computer is downstairs.

both computers have sound cards with micrphone inputs. I would like to

be able to talk from downstairs and she hear me upstairs and vice-versa.

I don't see why you are using NFS, this is a Unix protocol, so it adds significant overhead to a Windows system. As for speech, you need a server to implement this, easier is to both subscribe to Skype, which is a free provider, and then link through it.
The most simple and easy way to do a voice chat is to use Microsoft NetMeeting.

Networking multiple computers?

I don't know much about networking and thought I would ask this question, although it may sound trivial to most.

Basically I am wondering if I connect my laptop and desktop to a linksys modem box, can I use the programs from computer to computer? For example, I have Photoshop on my desktop and don't want to place it on my laptop so can I network my computers so I can use the program like this?

If using programs is not possible I am curious if networking is mainly for sharing documents?

Networks can do all kinds of things

they CAN be used to share documents. I share movies within my network. I can watch any of my movies from any computer. its really nice. I bought a vid card with tv out. so they're pumped to my big ol TVs.

Some networks allow you to use the CPUs together. So I could have 3 computers working (2 dual cpus and 1 single) thats 5 CPUs) on one project. Helps me with speeding up 3D rendering. You need to learn linux though. Its the only OS that can do it as far as I know.

I also share the signle cable internet connection with all three computers. Sweet.

but to get more direct to your question, Yes. program sharing is possible. (I know there are other ways, but I can't recall off the top of my head)

You can either dial from one computer to another directly using HyperTerminal or BitCom. If your ISP provides you with a toll free number and unlimited bandwidth, you're better off connecting to the internet from both computers and using something else to transfer files (perhaps by setting up an FTP server using FileZilla)

Remote desktop for 3 computers in a small business?

We are moving our small business. At the moment we have a server (computer) and our 2 other computers hook into this using 'remote desktop'.

What is the best (and easiest) way to connect 3 computers to this one server? we will ahve one computer downstairs and the other 2 (and the server) upstairs? Will we just use remote desktop? it seems to work fine.

As long as all the computers in your work group connect to the same router you should be fine.

That way the computers and server will be able to communicate to each other through the router and send the 'remote desktop' commands.

Your new office should be wired in such a way that all of the computers and your router can connect to each other using the networking ports on the wall.
