Help needed with networking 2 computers with cable?

am using a cat 5E crossover patch cable, but I cannot get the computers to regonize each other. They both have the same workname and the ip address are the same apart from the last digit.and the submask is 250.250.250.0 the light that is beside the connection at he back of the computer is yellow on my main computer and it is green on the second computer. I also cannot ping either computer with the other. Both my NIC's are working according to the computers.

Change the subnet to 255.255.255.0 I think they will work.

Let me ask...are you connecting the two computers directly? If so, that will not work. You need a ethernet hub between the two computers.

And the info provided by previous answerers regarding subnet mask is correct.

Your subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0
Sounds to me like you need to change your subnet mask. Also ensure you IP address's are in that same classfull subnet mask. Example IP's: 192.168.1.101 192.168.1.102 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0. And if operating system is Win9X ensure you have Netbeui protocol installed. and Double check to make sure "workname=workgroup" is the same.
