Reformating computers.?

Can you insert a vista disk onto a computer that crashed to reformat it. For example, when your computer crashes, you will usually see a blue error screen. Can you insert the vista cd and then reinstall that way or can you only reformat computers that are in working conditions.

I have a vista disk and I don't know if I can install it if my computer crashes. Thanks for your replies and help.

It'll probably work. Best way to find out is try it! (No, you don't have to wipe it), just put the DVD in and see if you can boot from it into the setup. Once you see the setup screen come up, turn it off.

If it boots up, then yes, it will work. Vista doesn't require an OS to already be there before you start. It'll take care of it.

Of course, this all assumes you have a full version and not an "Upgrade" version of Vista... in which case, ignore what I said, it won't work. :)

You can repair Windows with your disk, if you make a bootable floppy first or change your boot sequence to boot from a cd-rom. It wouldn't be considered reformatting, however, it would be a reinstall or repair.

To reformat, you would totally reformat your hard drive and then reinstall Windows onto the blank drive.
