2 computers, 1 printer!! - printer is NOT network ready Canon mp610?

I have a new printer Canon MP610 and I need to use it for a desktop computer as well as a laptop.

I have been told this printer is not suitable for networks??, but the people at Canon suggested I try an access point or router.

Can anyone tell me in simple language if I am able to do the following options:

Option 1: Have BOTH computers connected to the printer (via usb cable)

Option 2: Have the desktop computer connected via USB cable and have the laptop wirelessly connected...(this is the preferred option)

Also, what is the approx AUD cost of each option.

many many thanks!!

you could definitely set yourself up the way dick smith advised you - keep in mind thought that the suggested d-link router is only a G54mbps device which essentially means that you're only going to get wireless reception on your laptop within the same room.. possibly a couple of rooms either side.

keep in mind that the canon mp610 is bluetooth enabled - meaning that if your laptop has bluetooth also, you can easily communicate between devices. otherwise, bluetooth enabling your laptop with a usb dongle would cost you far less than the price of a wireless router/print server.
