Computers for Gaming? is there much of a difference?

I was checking out best buy for computers. and they have these certain laptop computers called alienware for gaming? is there much of a difference vs these and a regular computer for your regular games that you play? I guess my 9 year old son and I play alot of games. sims, king kong, zoo tycoon.. Need something that has the capabilities to play these games as well as the correct video card and memory space.

alienware computers are very overpriced and generally a waste of money , laptops in general are not good for gaming unless you want to spend over 1500 dollars at the very least , if you want to buy a desktop you can custom build a top of the line gaming computer for around 1300 dollars or buy one for a couple hundred more , you want a desktop with windows xp (not vista ) and at least 2 gb of ram , you want a graphics card that is ethier nvidia 8600 or a nvidia 8800 , I suggest the 8800gt personally.

the nvidia graphics cards (what you really need for gaming) are numbered in the thousands by batch , and in the hundreds by speed within batch , for example an 8800gt is far better than a 7800gt , an 8400gt is beaten very badly by an 8800 gt or even an 8600gt .

you want a core 2 duo processor , or a quad core processor.

I also suggest a 20 inch monitor which you can get bundled or you can buy for between 200 and 300 dollars.
